On the protection of minority languages in the EP

The future of minority languages in Europe was on the agenda of the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 24th as Hungarian MEP from Romania Csaba Sógor, Wales MEP Jill Evans and South-Tyrolean MEP Herbert Dorfmann hosed a conference entitled Language, Identity and Power. The event organised on the International Mother Tongue Day was attended by representatives of the civil, political and professional society.

Ancient fortress ruins to be explored at Racu

The local administration of Racu (Harghita County) organised a meeting on Friday, February 20th to discuss a dig at the site of a historically and archeologically important fortress situated near the settlement. The mayor of the town and MEP Csaba Sógor took the initiative to organise the meeting attended by archaeologist István Botár, who presented the history of the fortress and specialist Szabolcs Fazakas, who stressed the touristic potential and the opportunities it would have for the community.

Csaba Sógor: Romania must prepare for the new EU cohesion policy framework

Calls for project proposals out of the Agriculture and Rural Development Fund, soon to be available for local administrations, were presented to the mayors of Covasna County. The event entitled Rural development with European Union funds, which took place on the 19th of February was organised at the initiative of MEP Csaba Sógor in partnership with the RegioConsult Management and Investment Advisory Company and the territorial organisation of the RMDSZ.

The OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities at the Minority Workgroup meeting of the EP

Astrid Thors, High Commissioner on National Minorities at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe presented the situation of national minorities in Europe at the Strasbourg meeting of the European parliament’s Minority Workgroup on February 12th. The High Commissioner stressed the importance of a definition of national minorities and the need for peaceful diplomatic relations between states in the interest of protecting and applying minority rights.

An increasing number of MEPs recognize the "Copenhagen dilemma" in the EU

Members of the European Parliament debated the situation of democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights in the EU on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by the Vice-President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans and a representative of the Latvian Presidency. MEPs assessed what tools the EU has in case EU member states themselves do not meet the Copenhagen criteria.

European Roadmap for Linguistic Diversity

The Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) is launching a roadmap for protecting linguistic diversity. Through a number of strategic recommendations, it presents a well structured plan which would ensure that the languages of Europe are able to survive and prosper. The draft document was presented on Thursday, February 5th at the European Parliament in Brussels.

“The European Ombudsman should engage in raising awareness about the national minority rights specified in the European agreements and treaties”- pointed out Csaba Sógor in the European Parliament. The EP reviewed the activities of the institution for the year 2013 on Thursday, January 15th.

Minority issues on the agenda of the European Parliament’s Paneuropean Working Group

This month's topic of the Paneuropean Working Group of the European Parliament concerned the issue of national minorities. Austrian MEP Paul Rübig, president of the working group entrusted RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor to present the situation of traditional minorities in Europe at the meeting in Strasburg on the 13th of January 2015.
