European Parliament Conference Concludes: EU Needs Fresh Input to Facilitate the Collective Understanding of Religious Freedom

On 30 June 2015, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), in cooperation with Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Minority Rights Group International (MRG) and International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) convened an international conference entitled ‘Freedom of Religion? The Price of Faith’ at the European Parliament in Brussels. Hosted by Csaba Sógor MEP (EPP), György Hölvényi MEP (EPP) and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP (ALDE), the conference addressed the issues arising when people’s freedom to practice their religion comes into contention with social and geopolitical forces, as well as the question of how to promote constructive relations between religious communities and cultures.

The Dalai Lama celebrated with an exhibition in the EP

On the 30th of June an exhibition was held to celebrate the religious and political leader of Tibet in sign of appreciation of the example he represents for the whole world. The exhibition entitled Ways of wisdom was organized on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the XIVth incarnation of Dalai Lama by Csaba Sógor and Thomas Mann MEP's in cooperation with the office of Tibet (Brussels) and International Campaign for Tibet.

Timmermans: there are some other things to do in Romania regarding minority protection

The first vice-president of the European Commission expressed a clear position about the situation of the Hungarian minority in Romania. Frans Timmermans said that there are deficiencies in Romania in the field of minority protection, but it must be seen what already has been achieved thanks to the European Union.

Csaba Sogor in the EP: We are waiting for a coherent position from the EU institutions in the case of the restitution process

The EU institutions are unable to formulate a coherent position and commitments related to the case of the restitution process in Romania, meanwhile the budgetary committee of the US Congress is already making the preparations for a report in the matter, pointed out MEP Csaba Sógor in the European Parliament. The RMDSZ politician was talking about the topic of restitution in his one-minute speech at the mini-plenary meeting held on the 24th June in Brussels.

National Solidarity Day: Conference held in Bratislava on the situation of Hungarians in Slovakia and Transylvania

On the occasion of National Solidarity Day an exhibition entitled "Encounters, Hungarian travellers and explorers" was opened on 3rd June in Csemadok, at the headquarters of the main Hungarian cultural organization in Slovakia. Hosted by RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor, the bilingual exhibition could be visited at first in Brussels, later in Covasna and Lendava.

Hungarian Art Nouveau Architecture in Europe

MEP Csaba Sógor opened a new exhibition entitled Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture in Europe on the 26th of May in the European Parliament. The exhibition showcases prominent buildings of several Central and Eastern European cities representing the Art Nouveau style, part of the Hungarian architectural heritage.

Csaba Sógor: The abuses of the Romanian institutions in the fight against corruption cannot be left unmentioned

The importance of the anti-corruption fight is undisputable, but the exaggerations of the Romanian authorities cannot be left unmentioned. Often enough the media announces accusations before the authorities, and these charges may or may not be confirmed later -  declared MEP Csaba Sógor during the May 7th meeting of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee of the European Parliament during the debate on the European Commission’s 2014 report on Romania's and Bulgaria's progress on judiciary reform.

Public hearing in the EP on the protection of traditional national minorities

The issue of traditional national minorities was on the agenda of the European People's Party (EPP) for the first time during a public hearing on the matter organised on Wednesday April 22nd in Brussels. The conclusion that may be drawn following the hearing attended by international specialists and NGO representatives is that an EPP guideline should be set in the field. The document is expected to be drafted by the group's members in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) committee of the EP.
