The European Commission aims to increase the number of disabled workers in the EU institutions

The European Commission encourages people with disabilities to apply for jobs in the European Union institutions and gives assurance that all necessary arrangements will be made to create the necessary working conditions for them. Members of the European Parliament debated on the issue on the 15th of April. During the plenary session in Brussels the MEPs agreed: the European Union institutions need to set an example for the Member States in this issue.

The European parliament commemorated the Armenian genocide

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide the European Parliament urged Turkey and Armenia to reconcile their differences. During the Brussels mini-plenary session on the 15th of April the MEPs honoured the memory of the 1.5 million innocent Armenians who fell victims of the genocide in the Ottoman Empire, and adopted a resolution urging the two nations to truthfully reconcile.

The European Commission is examining German regulations on freight transport

The European Parliament debated on the German regulations, which also affect Eastern-European freight transport operators. The plenary debate WAS held in Brussels on Wednesday, 25 March, in the presence of European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc.

In reference to the Szekler freedom day of 10 March banned in Târgu-Mureș Csaba Sógor called upon the European Parliament to remind Romania: restricting the right of assembly is not a tool of democratic systems.

The EP urges Serbia to draft an action plan regarding national minorities

The European Parliament urges Serbia to draft an action plan for resolving the issues of national minorities in a resolution adopted on Wednesday, 11th of March, following a debate on the previous evening.  Csaba Sógor commented on the subject saying that he hopes Serbia would set a good example for the member states that fail to meet the Copenhagen criteria after accession to the European Union.

The European People’s Party Group (EPP) held a two day board meeting in Toledo. The Digital Economy Programme and fighting terrorism in the EU and outside its borders were on the agenda of the European Parliament's largest political group on the 5th and 6th of March.

On 24 February 2015, Csaba Sógor MEP organized a conference entitled “Language, Identity & Power: What Future for Minority Languages in Europe”, with Herbert Dorfmann (EPP) and Jill Evans (EFA/Greens) MEPs, in cooperation with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), the European Free Alliance (EFA) and the Centre Maurits Coppieters (CMC).

On the protection of minority languages in the EP

The future of minority languages in Europe was on the agenda of the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 24th as Hungarian MEP from Romania Csaba Sógor, Wales MEP Jill Evans and South-Tyrolean MEP Herbert Dorfmann hosed a conference entitled Language, Identity and Power. The event organised on the International Mother Tongue Day was attended by representatives of the civil, political and professional society.

The OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities at the Minority Workgroup meeting of the EP

Astrid Thors, High Commissioner on National Minorities at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe presented the situation of national minorities in Europe at the Strasbourg meeting of the European parliament’s Minority Workgroup on February 12th. The High Commissioner stressed the importance of a definition of national minorities and the need for peaceful diplomatic relations between states in the interest of protecting and applying minority rights.
