Csaba Sogor in the EP: We are waiting for a coherent position from the EU institutions in the case of the restitution process

The EU institutions are unable to formulate a coherent position and commitments related to the case of the restitution process in Romania, meanwhile the budgetary committee of the US Congress is already making the preparations for a report in the matter, pointed out MEP Csaba Sógor in the European Parliament. The RMDSZ politician was talking about the topic of restitution in his one-minute speech at the mini-plenary meeting held on the 24th June in Brussels.

Csaba Sogor said that case of nationalized properties by the communist power in Romania was repeatedly raised before the European Parliament and the Commission. He stressed that the Romanian restitution process has stopped, while in the case of an important church property, the court decided to re-nationalize it, judging the officers carrying out their official duties in the restitution committee guilty. Csaba Sógor emphasized that the European institutions have not spoken on this unacceptable situation nor did they take into consideration that Romania broke its legal commitments towards the EU and the Council of Europe.

"On the 11th June 2015 the Budgetary Committee of the US Congress unanimously introduced the drafting of a report on the issue of restitution of Romanian church properties into the budget of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the US, to be finalized within 90 days" stressed the RMDSZ MEP. Csaba Sógor emphasized that while the effective implementation of human and minority rights in an EU member state interests the USA, our own institutions are unable to formulate a coherent position on such issues.
