MEP Csaba Sógor spoke about the situation of the Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Tirgu Mures, Romania, in the plenary session of the European Parliament on the 26th of September.

The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania voiced his concern about the situation that threatens the Hungarian department of the University.

Here follows the MEP’s speech:
“The newly adopted education law in Romania states that the Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Tirgu Mures is a multicultural university. Almost half of the students there are Hungarian. Although the law provides for a Hungarian department within the University, the Romanian leadership of the University is reluctant to facilitate this: they do everything in their power to obstruct Hungarian teaching in the university that is formally multicultural and attended by 50% Hungarian students.
This is the multiculturalism and minority-friendly politics that is characteristic to some member states.
Through the Copenhagen Criteria the attitude of candidate countries towards minorities was also evaluated. We must make the Criteria accountable even after accession, especially in Eastern Europe. It is a mistake to overlook this, a mistake that can later become even worse.”
