DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor met with EP President Jerzy Buzek at the last plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

As the EPP substitute coordinator for the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee of the EP, MEP Csaba Sógor informed the President about the opinion of the EPP members of LIBE and the work that is being done in the Committee with regard to Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area. MEP Simon Busuttil, the EPP coordinator of the Committee also attended the meeting.

The LIBE Committee handles all matters related to the legislation and democratic oversight of policies linked to the transformation of the European Union in the area of freedom, security and justice, the implementation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in EU territory and the strengthening of European Citizenship. Thus, the Committee’s jurisdiction covers issues related to the extension of the borders of the Schengen Area as well.
The politicians discussed the positions of the member states that oppose Romania’s accession, as well as the opinions of MEPs in the EP and the Committee.

Csaba Sógor informed the President about Romania’s progress towards the accession. Following the meeting, Buzek promised to support, in his capacity as President of the EP, the swift progress of the parliamentary processes, once the corresponding document arrives from the European Commission.
