A truly united Europe can be achieved only through balanced economic development
The European Parliament (EP) held its plenary sitting in Brussels on 6-7 October with the focus on the refinement of the economic, social and cohesion policies.
DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor made remarks in the debate about Europe’s cohesion and regional policy after 2013.
Here follows the speech of the Hungarian MEP from Transylvania:
„The EU’s cohesion and regional policies bare importance not only from the point of view of economic competitiveness, it is also relevant to the ideal of European unity. I believe we all agree on the fact that a truly united Europe can be achieved on the medium and long term only through balanced economic development. Therefore it is essential to the efficient implementation of the EU 2020 strategy and the fulfillment of its goals that the regions with different levels of development all benefit from the process. Thus it is vital for the underdeveloped regions that the funding for the cohesion policy remains at the same level. We need to avoid division of Europe due to the slow development of the newly joined member states.”
Csaba Sógor also attended the EP’s debate on the death penalty. He presented his remarks in writing due to the lack of speaking time.
„The death penalty, although prohibited in the 27 EU member states and the members of the Council of Europe, is common practice in many states around the world. The most saddening fact is that in many cases it is not applied for ordinary crimes, but against political and religious views, cultural habits or brave representation. Europe realized that it cannot base its legislation on a concept that allows the violent ending of a human life. The time has come for Europe to represent and promote this wise insight in the parts of the world where people have not yet realized this. Cultural diversity, different views on the world enrich human civilization, and no law – neither divine nor human – can justify the practice of the death penalty.”
