Csaba Sógor and Gyula Winkler welcomed the winners of EU-contests

The two MEPs welcomed a group of Hungarian youth from Transylvania to the European Parliament between 27 and 29 of September. The group of 47 consisted of the winners of the Karrier Express contest from the EU Camp and of the webEU contest from the palyazatok.ro website.

The visitors had a chance to experience in person how does the EP work, since one of the tasks of the webEU contest was to elaborate the local component of the EU 2020 program, exactly at a time when the EU institutions were working on finalizing its first draft.

Speaking to the visitors, DAHR’s MEP Gyula Winkler praised the Hungarian Youth Council of Romania (MIÉRT) and its programs because they offer topics through which young Hungarian people from Transylvania can participate in European processes. Using a pun, Winkler said that we need to take Europe to Transylvania and show Transylvania to Europe because it is equally important to present Transylvanian values in Europe and to bring European realities and the consistent work of DAHR’s MEPs in Brussels back to Transylvania. These MEPs have been promoting Transylvanian values, specialties and traditions for several years by organizing events, expositions and inviting speakers to Brussels. We need to draw the conclusions. Four years after Romania’s accession to the European Union, we need to inform the Hungarians living in Romania about the work DAHR does on the European level, about the activities of the EU institutions, the EP and European People’s Party – said Winkler. He also announced the upcoming formation of DAHR’s EU-information network with the MEPs contributing to its development. Hopefully, MIÉRT, the representative of Hungarian youth organizations cooperating with DAHR, will be a partner in this.

DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor greeted the visitors and stated that it is very important for young people to experience the things they’ve only learned about in theory. – The experiences gained here can easily give answers to the challenges we face back home. For example, in Brussels, as well as in Transylvania and in DAHR, we need strong institutions, not strong personalities.

The MEP also spoke about the global crisis. He explained that it has been proven that well prepared countries and individuals were less influenced by the crisis. Csaba Sógor said that lifelong learning is a necessity these days and that the knowledge obtained at the university is only enough at the start of one’s career. After, he spoke about equal opportunities. – Young people today can only find their way in today’s world if their professional knowledge is paired up with the ability to speak several languages. The future is in conciliation, creating opportunities, peace and cooperation. A visit to Brussels is great starting point – summed up the Hungarian MEP from Transylvania.

The webEU contest is a long-lasting project on the palyazatok.ro website. Participating are teams of young people with an interest in their region’s economic, touristic, cultural and ecological development. The teams always received their tasks on Monday and had two weeks to complete them. Their work was judged by a jury of three. The winners were decided based upon the jury’s evaluation and the vote of the public. Beside the four periodic tasks, the teams also had two permanent tasks as well. The aim of the contest was to promote project-based thinking amongst young Hungarian people living in Romania, to broaden their knowledge about European project management and to generate creative, sustainable and developed ideas that can be later sustained by the European Union.

The other contest was the Karrier Express from the EU Camp. It spanned the whole Camp and the participants matched their knowledge and skill grouped into six teams. The novelty of the contest was that every team formed a business, each of them aiming at gathering the largest amount of camp-cash. The teams involved the organizers, guests and speakers of the camp into the contest as well.
