The situation in the Korean peninsula is regarded as an important issue in foreign relation by the European Commission and the EP as well. The high-level talks are focused on two agreements: a framework-agreement and one regarding free trade. The speakers carefully marked off their view on developing relation with South and North Korea. South Korea, the host of the next G20 summit is regarded as an important actor in global politics by the EU. According to the EC’s resolution, the EU plans closer relation with this country in the fields of combating terrorism, weapon restrictions, energy policy and human rights.
The EU’s relations with North Korea are different: although ready to give humanitarian aid to the country, the EU is ready to impose sanctions in order to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The recent sinking of South-Korean war ship is condemned as an irresponsible atrocity by the MEPs who adhered to the declaration prepared by Mrs. Ashton.
DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor took the stand on several occasions during the debate. He expressed his call upon the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to voice the standpoint of the EU in a more firm manner.
He also urged the elimination of the communist past, the prevention of all infringements of minority rights and discriminatory citizenship law and the abolition of all laws maintaining the notion of collective guilt in the EU. In his opinion, in the absence of these measures „ we have no strength, voice and credibility in the world because the EU is not considered an authentic organization. We will not be considered authentic until we do not clean up (on) our own doorstep.”
