There is linguistic genocide in the European Union

2009-11-24

Mr. Sógor Csaba, MEPs speech in the European Parliament's debate on minority language rights.

„Francesco Capotorti: When the UN was working on the convention came to be known as the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, linguistic and cultural genocide was mentioned together with physical genocide as a grave crime against humanity”.

The 1948 convention of the UN defines (art. 3.1) linguistic genocide as „the interdiction of minority language use in everyday interaction, schools or the prohibiting of printing and distribution of minority language books”.

There is linguistic genocide in Slovakia today, and the situation is almost the same in other EU member countries. Romania, Greece and France follow Slovakia in this matter.
