Sógor Csaba spoke for mandatory norms in minority protection in the EU

The European Parliament examined the progress made by candidate countries Croatia, the former yugoslav republic Macedonia and Turkey in its plenary session in Strasbourg on the 10th of February.

In his speech, DAHR’s MEP Sógor Csaba pointed out that the member states should set an example for the candidates in their minority policy.

„Croatia and the FYROM have made steps in the direction of protection of minority rights but they are far from getting an excellent qualification. So what can we do? The EU should encourage these countries through its own exemplary protection of national minorities’ rights. But what can we see in the EU? It would be good if France and others ratified the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, if Slovakia ceased its discriminatory actions towards national minorities, if Greece acknowledged that national minorities exist within its borders and granted them individual and community rights.

Hopefully Romania will soon have a minority law of its own, but we are still far from having persons belonging to national minorities among the leadership of the army (although we expect this from Turkey), and Romanians are more afraid of the notion of autonomy than of the 14th Russian army in Transnistria.

The European Parliament can encourage the member states to become better examples by proposing community level regulations for the protection of national minorities.”
