2010-03-03

The Hungarian delegation to the European Parliament (EP) organized a commemoration ceremony on March 2nd 2010 for Romanian handball player Marian Cozma murdered last year in Veszprém.

The ceremony started with the words of Schmitt Pál, the vice-president of the EP, former two-time Olympic champion and continued with the screening of Csillag Ádám documentary film A country stabbed through the heart. The documentary tells te story of the career of the young handball player in Hungary and presents the investigation data and witness testimonies surrounding his death.

MEP Sógor Csaba took an active role in the event; he met with Petre Cozma, the victims father and accompanied him throughout the event.

Marian Cozma was considered a world class player; his death was mourned last year by two countries: his homeland, Romania and his chosen home, Hungary. The circumstances of his tragic death are still unclear with the investigation still ongoing. His teammates, neighbors and the citizens of Veszprém spoke of their grief and fear in front of the camera. Marian Cozma’s untimely death was a great loss to his team where Cubans, Serbs, Croatians, Russians and Hungarians play sports alongside each other.

His loving memory was an aid in overcoming the grief: Veszprém went on to win a European championship. They say they’ve received the most support and strength to carry on from the victim’s father, Petre Cozma who is also involved with handball: he is a handball trainer and was mentor to his son. Since Marian’s death, Petre Cozma has founded a school in Bucharest bearing his son’s name where talented children can learn the secrets of the sport.

- The young Marian Cozma did more while he was alive and through his death than us politicians in years for an idea we politicians have been working towards for years: peaceful coexistence – said Sógor Csaba in remembrance of the handball player.
