The EU should put more emphasis on conflict prevention

2014-11-13

The European Parliament expressed its concern Thursday, 13 November in relation to the recent developments of the peace process in Northern Ireland.  The resolution adopted on the 13th of November by the members of the EP calls for improving inter-community relations and continuing the peace process.

The document points out, that persistent violent, criminal and anti-social activities of certain extremist elements are undermining the peace process. According to the EP, the situation can be improved by overcoming the current economic challenges such as unemployment, low income levels and living standards.

RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor said: is quite clear that in addition to conflict resolution Europe must also deal with conflict prevention. “There are numerous conflicts going on in Europe, within EU Member States and in the Western Balkans, due to unresolved issues between communities. These issues should be addressed by the European institutions – explained the MEP.

Csaba Sógor pointed out that, as the case of Norhern Ireland shows, the EU is able to contribute to strengthening peaceful and stable societies if it pays attention to the conflicts between communities in bordering, membership-candidate and member states alike, and if it plays an active role in solving them.
