National minority rights among the priorities of the European People’s Party for 2014-2019
The European People’s Party (EPP) has included the protection of traditional national and linguistic minority rights among the priorities of its 2014-2019 strategy. The members of the largest MEP group met between the 16th and the 19th of June in Portugal. The RMDSZ MEPs were also present at the event.
“My colleague Gyula Winkler and I, along with other MEPs, requested that the protection of traditional minority rights be included in the strategic plan elaborated by the EPP Group for the next 5 years”, said MEP Csaba Sógor. The RMDSZ MEP pointed out that the EPP adopted a political resolution at the 2009 congress in Bonn, which states that the cultural and linguistic heritage of the minorities living in the EU is a European value, and it should be protected through the best practices in the field of minority rights. Csaba Sógor also mentioned the document adopted at the EPP’s 2012 congress in Bucharest, which again underscores the importance of minority rights.
“Europe, and the political groups within the European Union have many challenges to face in the near future. The EPP listed the promotion of economic growth, reindustrialisation and job creation, the creation of a safe digital market, dealing with migration problems and equal opportunities for women among its priorities. What we did was to remind our colleagues within the EPP that measures important to the minority communities should also be included among these priorities”, declared Csaba Sógor.
