Csaba Sógor in the European Parliament on the autonomy aspirations of Szeklerland
On the day of the Szeklers’ demonstration for autonomy, MEP Csaba Sógor
also took the opportunity to talk about the message of the Day of
Szekler Freedom on the March plenary session of the European Parliament.
The MEP from RMDSZ declared that there are numerous unfinished issues
concerning the situation of Hungarians living in Romania, reason for
which the community demands a dialogue from the Romanian government.
„Today in the Transylvanian town of Târgu Mureș
through a peaceful demonstration the Hungarians living in Romania
demanded again the territorial autonomy of Szeklerland, a region with
Hungarian majority. More than two decades ago, the almost 1,5 million
strong Hungarian community from Romania has formulated its demand that
Szeklerland, which is inhabited mostly by Hungarians, to form a region
with a special status, and to be granted extensive decision-making
rights, while respecting the territorial integrity of Romania”, declared
Sógor at the Strasbourg seat of the European Parliament.
Csaba Sógor also emphasized the lessons of the international practice: that the various forms of autonomy are conducive to peace and a harmonious relationship between ethnic groups. The Hungarian politician from Transylvania added that the Hungarian community from Romania voices its discontent peacefully, trying to engage into a dialogue with the Romanian government. Sógor also asked the international community to listen to the voice of the Hungarians from Romania.
