Declaration

2010-06-09

We, the Members of the European Parliament of the Democratic Allience of Hungarians in Romania welcome the unanimous decision of the Group of the European People's Party to propose our colleague, László Tőkés to the position of vice-president of the European Parliament.

The previous nomination made by the FIDESZ delegation made it possible for a Hungarian national from Romania to fill this important position, thus creating new possibilities and opportunities to represent, in Europe, the interests of the Hungarian community living in Romania.

It is an honour for the Romanian EPP delegation that FIDESZ proposed a Transylvanian politician for the Hungarian vice-president position. The decision has symbolic value in the relations between Hungary and Romania, born in the open and tolerant spirit of Europe and will most certainly strenghten the Hungarian-Romanian cooperation in the European People’s Party.

We emphasize that the nomination and the possible position of László Tőkés, on the first place on the in the Hungarian Solidarity list, will constitute an instrument that can be used to better represent our specific strives as a minority and the issue of the European framework for national minority rights.

The plenary session of the European Parliament  is still ahead, but in anticipation of a positive decision we wish to convey our wishes of good luck to our colleague
