The revolution of 1848, commemorated at Odorheiu Secuiesc through a science history conference
This year, the Mayor’s Office of Odorheiu Secuiesc organized a three-day event in order to commemorate the revolution and war of independence of 1848. Alongside the official commemoration in the Márton Áron Square, locals could also take part in cultural and traditional programmes and attend a two-day scientific conference as well.
The conference entitled Science in Szeklerland – Szekler Scientists featured presentations from 13 different scientific fields. DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor attended the conference on Friday.
The series of presentations, which were organized under the patronage of former president of the Hungarian Scientific Academy, Dr. Szilveszter Vizi, started in the afternoon of the 15th of March and finished in the evening of the 16th. During the first day assistant professor Gusztáv Hermann made a presentation with the title The Scientist – in Szeklerland and Beyond and historian Dr. Ákos Egyed spoke about the forerunners of Szekler historiography.
The second day featured, among others, archaeologist András Sófalvi, academics dr. Ferenc Pozsony, dr. Zoltán Gábos, dr. Mihály Péter and József Kolumbán, as well as university professors dr. Emese Egyed, dr. László Dávid and dr. Emese Fazakas. The attendees had the opportunity to learn about famous Szekler doctors, pharmacists, mathematicians, physicists, scientists and key figures of Szekler agriculture.
According to the Hungarian MEP from Transylvania, Csaba Sógor, when remembering the events of 1848 we also need to acknowledge that the Szekler generals of the war of independence, like Áron Gábor, András Tuzson, Sándor Gál became successful partly because they paired their heroism with knowledge gained at military academies.
“The events of March 1848 can also have a different message: true development and growth is not only related to economic potential or to the size of a population, these are all in vain if the educated minds are absent. It was good to hear that so many scientists and researchers live and work in Szeklerland, because the power of the region lies in its ability to develop itself while preserving the values of the past. This can be best guaranteed through the practice of sciences” – observed Csaba Sógor.
