Young people on the European job market

Organized at Zabola by the Youth Council of Háromszék (HÁRIT) between the 13th and the 17th of July, 2011, the Summer University of Háromszék organized under the motto “We are building Háromszék! Our heritage binds us.”



The series of presentation on Saturday morning was opened by DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor, who made a presentation entitled “Young people on the European job market”. The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania made reference to the chapters regarding youth of the EU2020 strategy. He mentioned that the EU intends to reduce school dropouts from 15 to 10 percent over the course of the next nine years, while Romanian has a target of 11,3%. In parallel, the EU intends to raise the level of university graduates from 31 to 40 percent. Romania intends to achieve 26,7.

 

MEP Csaba Sógor emphasized that the EU’s employment strategy cannot be based on immigration, therefore specialist that are needed have to be trained. “The economic recession speeded up the tendency to reduce the number of jobs in the primary and processing sector, while more jobs were created in the service sector” – he explained and added that young people have a better chance in the EU if they become multilingual and learn at least three European and one Asian language.

 

“We need as many university graduates as we can get, but it is important for young people to also learn a secondary profession.  We do not need just lawyers, doctors and economists on job market, we also need qualified workers as well” – explained Sógor, who also said that in the present unstable economic situation it is better to rely on more that one pillar, this is how we can survive these troubled times with minimal losses.

 

At the end of his speech the MEP reminded that the deadline for the Internship Program to his Brussels office is September 30th and he awaits applications from young people interested in learning about the EP and the actual work of MEPs.
