This year’s commemoration celebrations of the Hungarian revolution of 1848-49 started in Baciu, Cluj County
The people of Baciu, Cluj County, commemorated the Hungarian revolution of 1848-49 on the 12th of March. DAHR president Hunor Kelemen and MEP Csaba Sógor also attended the celebration on the 163rd anniversary of the Hungarian nation’s most important freedom fight. The commemoration featured the concert of the 140 member strong Children’s philharmonic orchestra from Vlãhiţa.
„Alike the youth of 1848, we need to look into the future” – said Hunor Kelemen at the commemoration, reminding that the Hungarian minority in Romania could not celebrate its national day in peace even in the last 20 years. DAHR’s president called the commemorations of March „our constant struggle for freedom after 1989” that represents a part of the process of becoming a modern nation for the Hungarian community, just like the in the years before the revolution of 1848.
In his speech, MEP Csaba Sógor talked about the siege of the castle at Komárom, where the defenders, led by György Klapka, held out until the last minute against an Austrian army that heavily outnumbered them. „The protection of Hungarian communities outside Hungary requires solidarity as seen at the siege of Komárom. It is true that today we fight for our freedom with the democratic means in parliaments, but we still need common ideals and thinking” – said the Hungarian MEP from Transylvania. The DAHR’s politician expressed his belief, that the heroes of 1848 fought in the spirit of fraternity and equality, and these are the values that need to be carried on today as well.
The MEP also reminded about the April Laws of 1848 that can be considered a Constitution because they contoured the new political structure and provided the grounds for the transformation of society. „The process of the new Constitution drafting is currently ongoing in Hungary. In this matter, the opinion of Hungarians living outside the borders of Hungary has also been asked. We need law and order, this is the prerequisite of freedom and fraternity today” – he explained.
Csaba Sógor stated that the 12th request of the youth of 1848 has been fulfilled with our accession to the European Union, this enables Hungarian communities on the two sides of the border to celebrate the National Day together. The MEP said that this year’s commemoration festivities in Brussels will feature a folk dance presentation by the Maros Folk Ensemble that will present the importance of 1848 to the Hungarian nation through the international language of dance.
The audience was also greeted by Ferenc Deák, the president of the local DAHR organization, and festive speeches were also delivered by county DAHR president Attila László and state counselor Gabriella Pásztor.
