DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor held a presentation entitled European Politics and Christianity in the 21st century at the Reformed Student Home in Odorheiu Secuiesc on the 5th of March, 2011.

The Reformed Student Home in Odorheiu Secuiesc was founded twenty years ago in order to provide lodging, education, scholarships and Christian values for out of town students. The Home currently hosts 62 students.

During his speech, the MEP spoke of practicing politics according to Christian values and christian-democracy. He also made a short presentation of the European Union and of his own work schedule, so the students had the opportunity to better understand the activities of an MEP.

- Doing politics according to Christian values means to serve the community with the all means available. We must consider man and nature as a creation of God, so we need to set our sights to the eternity, not to mandates. A true Christian is open hearted, favors honest dialogue and does not rely on coincidences, but believes that individual and community life has a purpose. We must support the society, the well being, security and freedom of our community through all our decision – said Csaba Sógor, who also pointed out, that the fact that the EU does not surround itself with barbed wire against immigrants, but rather urges the improvement of the conditions in their countries of origin, can be considered an act of decision making based on Christian values.

The MEP stressed that we need to have Christian values and live according to the Christian spirit. We need to be able to formulate these values in the highly secular Europe of today and the less tolerant Muslim majority of the future.

Csaba Sógor also referred to the fact that USA’s constitution in based on the Ten Commandments, while most of the European countries’ constitutions are based on the values of freedom, equality and fraternity of the French Revolution.

- The Ten Commandments speak about fundamental human rights and norms, moral values that can be found in Christians without the necessity of having laws in the matter – said the MEP.
