As guest speaker of the Mikó Imre Law and Economics College, MEP Csaba Sógor spoke about the current issues of the European Union, including Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession into the Schengen Area.

The Mikó Imre Law and Economics College has been active in Cluj Napoca for over 10 years now with the aim of aiding Hungarian law and economics students in Cluj to complement their training and to enhance their professional knowledge.

MEP Csaba Sógor was the guest of the College on the 28th of January, 2011. The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania addressed issues such as Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession into the Schengen Area and the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

During the discussion that followed the speech, it became obvious that the students closely follow the European issues. They asked the MEP about Romania’s chances for Romania to adhere to Schengen without Bulgaria. In his answer the MEP explained that Romania has fulfilled the technical criteria necessary for the accession so it is entitled to expect to the accepted at the previously agreed moment.

The problem comes from the fact that the only border between Romania and Bulgaria is the Danube River, thus the security of the Area can only be assured through the joint accession of the two countries. This is why it would have been very important for the two countries to precede together through the accession process. Should Romania adhere on its own, it would have to comply with further requirements, meant to strengthen the security of the Border with Bulgaria.

The MEP also stated that the Hungarian Presidency supports the two country’s accession and urges the compliance with the regulations in force. Bulgaria has made a promise to fulfill the criteria by mid-March. Csaba Sógor believes that the progress needs to be monitored because the postponement of the accession could have negative consequences.

Besides the current issues, the European Citizen’s Initiative and other subjects related to the EU’s future were also discussed. Csaba Sógor also informed the students about the internship programs available at the European institutions and declared that the internship program for his own cabinet will be published in April 2011.
