The Christian Diakonia Foundation from Sfântu Gheorghe awarded the works of people with disabilities
This the first year when the Christian Diakonia Foundation from Sfântu Gheorghe gives awards to artists with disabilities. There were 115 entries to the contest promoted throughout Transylvania; all of these have been placed on exposition since December 10th 2010 in the Foundation’s Iris House.
The Christian Diakonia Foundation handed out the awards on the World Day of People with Disabilities. The winners of the contest received financial rewards. (There was a tie for the first place- ez igy nem jelent semmit), Given the tight contest, two competitors had to the share the prize money. The jury was very pleased to find out that many of the contest entries were at the level of as the works of acknowledged artists.
MEP Csaba Sógor praised the work of the center ran by the Foundation and the prize for the artists. During his opening speech he stated that even the EP would be less without those MEPs who overcome their disabilities and do adequate work there. – It is important to provide opportunities for the people with disabilities, to let them explore their talents and interests. We must provide them with a chance to express themselves because like all people, they can only unfold in this manner – declared the MEP who also called the attention of the Foundation to the EU funding opportunities available to them.
Guest of the event at the event, President of the Covasna County Council, Sándor Tamás said that the county’s budget clearly shows that they provide special support for social actions because 42% of the budget is being spent in this direction.
The opening ceremony of the exposition included a concert by visually impaired pianist from Budapest, Tamás Érdi, who also gave a concert the same day in the castle at Arcus.
The Iris House was opened one and a half years ago with Dutch and German support. It is the only institution in the region that provides job opportunities for young people with disabilities. The centre has a candle workshop, a clothing wholesale department and several opportunities for other crafts to be exercised by the twelve employees with disabilities. Local pastor Péter Makkai, the coordinator of the Foundation said that soon they will open their clothing store where the employees will be people with disabilities.
