Hungarian Christian-Democrat Movement from Romania held its IIIrd Congress

2010-12-11

The Hungarian Christian-Democrat Movement from Romania (RMKDM) held its third Congress on December 10th 2010 in Covasna. As a member of DAHR’s most powerful platform, MEP Csaba Sógor also attended the meeting where the new leadership of the Movement was elected and its program was modified.

Besides senators, MPs and mayors, the Congress also welcomed Romanian President Traian Bãsescu who reminded about the values of the movement: solidarity, family, righteousness and ethics. „These days there is much need for these core values in society” – said the President who believes that the governing coalition will be able to steer the country out of the crisis based on these values. He also considers that Romania is past the low-point of the crisis and that next year’s budget will lead to a small increase in economic indicators.

Bãsescu stated that while the country is in a economic crisis, the government faces a crisis of decisions. – This period is a time of restriction and unpopular actions. We cannot take responsibility for every citizen, this worked in the communist era, but not now. We are in an age when citizens need to take responsibility for themselves and their community. All we can do is speak honestly, without lies – said the President pointing out the responsibilities of the political elite and the civic sector.

Szili Katalin, former President of the Hungarian Parliament stressed the importance of national and interstate cooperation. – The first half of next year will be a prime time for dialogue and common planning because Hungary will have the Presidency of the EU – reminded Szili.

DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor stated at the Congress that having Christian values in politics means to serve the interests of the community with all the tools in hand. – Christian-democrat politicians should not think in terms of mandates, there can be only one perspective in our work: eternity – explained Sógor.

The MEP also reminded that the Movement’s main role is to set an example in the terms of patience, respect and tolerance. As he explained strife for uniformity and seeking differences can never be a Christian value, we must rather pay attention to the acceptance of different points of view. Sógor declared that the EU involves many other world religions, not only Christianity, and their numbers will increase in time, so the only road to peaceful coexistence is constant tolerance.

The Congress also saw the reelection of Kálmán Kelemen as the President of RMKDM. The Movement’s highest forum also decided that in the race for the Presidency of DAHR they would support the candidate who shares the Christian-Democrat values and considers strengthening the Alliance’s membership in European People’s Party as a priority.
