Commemoration ceremonies for the victims of the Hungarian revolution of 1956 in Sf. Gheorge and Miercurea Ciuc
Csaba Sógor: „ While today we don’t need to fight for our personal freedom, we must do so for our own dignity and the freedom of others”
„They’ve left us a royal heritage that we must earn, freedom that they did not win, but gave to us in one day” – said using French writer Albert Camus’ words DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor in the start of his speech in Sf. Gheorghe at the commemoration ceremonies of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
The commemoration ceremony was organized on the 23rd of October 2010, the anniversary of the revolution by the Mayor’s office of Sf. Gheorghe and the „Kónya Ádám” House of Culture. The series of events started with the placing of wreaths at the commemorative plaque of martyr Attila Szalai, the Gloria Victis plaque on the Town Hall, the monument of the victims of communism in the Erzsébet Park and the 1956 monument in the courtyard of the „Kónya Ádám” House of Culture.
„We are here today to honor the dead, the heroes, the survivors and those who have suffered and to ask ourselves: are we worthy of this royal heritage, our freedom, for which so many have given their lives” – said MEP Csaba Sógor reminding the audience about the importance of the message of the Hungarian revolution of 1956.
In his speech the MEP stated that revolutionaries from back then, students, workers, peasants and politicians arose in solidarity against the oppressive system and fought together for a free future. „Why is it that us Hungarians have only shown solidarity in the crucial moments of history? It is only in these moments that we realize that we can only depend on each other; there is no one to do our everyday work, work the field of win the autonomy. We expect Bucharest or even Brussels to solve the issues that we need to solve locally, through personal decisions” – emphasized the MEP who also added that we are worthy of the legacy of 1956 if we practice solidarity in our everyday lives as well, not only at festive commemorations.
Csaba Sógor believes that the period of revolution can never end because we are always in need of goals that aim at preserving and strengthening the values of the Hungarian nation. „ While today we don’t need to fight for our personal freedom, we must do so for our own dignity and the freedom of others” – said the MEP.
Following the commemoration ceremonies in Sf. Gheorghe, Csaba Sógor attended the festivities organized by the Major’s office of Miercurea Ciuc in collaboration with the Hungarian Consulate and the Former Political Prisoner’s Association, where he placed a wreath at the Gloria Victis monument in the 1956 square.
