The Mayor’s office in Miercurea Ciuc organized a contest with the participation of five high-schools on May 9th, Europe Day. Apart from proving their knowledge about the European Union, students could show off their creativity as well.

Their performance was rated by DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor, Attila Antal, deputy mayor of Miercurea Ciuc and István Zsolt Janovits from the Harghita County prefect’s EU integration office.

Teams of three represented the five high-schools from Miercurea Ciuc: the Márton Áron Gymnasium, the Kós Károly construction school, the Segítő Mária roman-catholic Gymnasium, the Octavian Goga National Gymnasium and the Venczel József high-school.

The contest started with a presentation of the students about the European Union and continued with contestants proving their general knowledge by answering test questions. Also, they could get valuable points through the What would you give to the EU? and Recognize out built heritage tasks as well.

After a close contest with very little difference between the team’s points, the Octavian Goga National Gymnasium came out victorious at the end. The winners’ prize consisted of diplomas, books and informational material.

- Such contest are important to me because here I can evaluate how much young people know about the European Union and I can contribute directly to the broadening of their knowledge. The EU plays by new rules and it is important that young people set off prepared in their careers – said Csaba Sógor at the award ceremony.
