MEP’s advice in the EU camp

2010-07-03

MEPs Csaba Sógor, Gyula Winkler and Sebastian Bodu’s presentation entitled Your Choice: public life or economic sector in the EU opened Saturday’s round of discussions of the EU camp. Taking into consideration the current state of affairs, the MEPs talked about the interaction between the public and the private sector.

After comparing the pros and cons of the private and public sector, Sebastian Bodu detailed the conditions of becoming a public official: „professional experience, readiness to cope with success and failure, constant care not just for what one communicates, but for what one is thought of”. He continued saying that one should not neglect his professional abilities even after becoming a politician: „do not evolve solely as a politician, but in all aspects of your capabilities because you never know when you’re going to need them” – was Bodu’s advice to the future politicians.

Continuing this idea, Gyula Winkler suggested that young people should take the current development trends into consideration when choosing a career. „There is a lot of talk about the crisis, especially about its economic side, but there is a much deeper crisis, a moral and social one. If confidence in society’s institutions is low, it is much more difficult to choose a career under these circumstances because role-models, social acceptance is important here” – said Gyula Winkler in his speech.

DAHR’s MEP says it is not enough to search for a career in Transylvania and the Carpathian Basin, but European trends need to be taken into consideration as well. „Some elements can be incorporated already: it is certain that the future’s society will be based on knowledge, we need to consider lifelong-learning a reality because a university degree will not suffice in building a successful career. We must accept that change is permanent and flexibility and courage is needed for success” – stated Winkler who thinks that the most important thing is to like what one is doing. „You can only cope with constant challenges if you really love the career you chose, this is the only way to be truly successful” – said Winkler.

When discussing the moral crisis, the MEP talked about the need for a new social contract that has been one of the issues in DAHR’s presidential candidate, Hunor Kelemen’s campaign last year. „Hungarians in Romania and Romanian society as a whole needs a new social contract that relies on European values to ensure success for us all” – concluded the MEP.

Csaba Sógor reminded the audience in his speech that in the current financial crisis the most important long-term investment should be made into education. „Many countries have realized that they need to assign a large part of their budget to education. With a proper education system we can provide youth with the opportunity to find their place in the public and private sector as well” – emphasized Csaba Sógor.

„Today information is power and the economy commands us to be specialists, thus it is them who hold the highest power” – added Sógor and he pointed out that a strong civil society is crucial to the establishment of a stabile public sector.

To sum up his words, Csaba Sógor made the example of Transylvanian-American psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihály’s flow-theory that relies on the parallel between work and pleasure: „A job is really good for you when you are able to completely immerse yourself in what you are doing” – said the MEP.
