New memorial preserves the heritage of Petőfi in Cristuru Secuiesc

There is a new memorial called Our Petőfi that preserves the heritage of the poet of freedom in Szekelykeresztúr/Cristuru Secuiesc. On July 31, the anniversary day of Sándor Petőfi’s death, this outdoor installation was set up for the public in the courtyard of the Gyárfás mansion. The artwork brings us closer to the stories and legends surrounding the poet’s memory. On the occasion of the Week dedicated to the memory of Petőfi, MEP Csaba Sógor held a festive speech.

“Today we remember Petőfi, who died 169 years ago near Keresztúr. We shouldn’t remember the poet as someone who died today, but the poet who represented freedom and love. It is our responsability that his memory would be preserved like this” - said Sógor.

The RMDSZ MEP stressed that one’s freedom means paying attention to others’ freedom as well. In his opinion many people are afraid of freedom because it comes with a great responsibility. “We can only be free if we care about our family, country, as well as our past and future. This idea helps us understand why many nations -who seem to be free- are actually very much in a dependant situation” - said.

Csaba Sógor continued: today we see that this country, as well as the European continent is going down.
In a way, this happens because we cannot live responsibly with our freedom. We should follow what Petőfi nicely exemplified through his life: he passionately loved his nation, homeland and environment.
The RMDSZ MEP reminded us of the Scripture verse: wherever the Lord's Spirit is, there is freedom. “Concerning our family, homeland or Europe, our future depends on being able to responsibly follow our Christian values with a kind of freedom that our ancestors gave their lives for” - he concluded.
