Hungarians in Central Transylvania also celebrated March 15th
Zakariás Benedek, president of DAHR in Szeben city, Béla Balázs, president of DAHR in Szeben county and Dr. József Andor Szabó, special attaché to the Hungarian embassy in Bucharest, who also attended the event.
March 15 is a special celebration of the Hungarian nation, a day that unites Hungarians Hungarians living sparsely in Central and Southern each year to comemorate the events of the Hungarian revolution of 1848-1489. The comemoration ceremony started with a festive church service and continued with the placement of wreaths at the memorial sites at Medgyes and Szelindek.
Sógor Csaba rendered the message of the 35th Psalm in his sermon, a prayer of man loving and seeking freedom, concluding that real freedom can only be received from God. – Even if the revolution failed, on this day we remember the victorious battles and the solidarity among people so we can celebrate with joy. Love for freedom hasn’t faded throughout the years and if we pray to God, we can enjoy this freedom not only on festive days, but in our everyday life as well – said the MEP, who also encouraged the doubtful: it doesn’t matter who our enemies are, if God is our friend. The festive service was followed by the placement of wreaths at the memorial monument near the reformed church in Medgyes.
The MEP then travelled to Szelindek where he layed another wreath at the plaques placed two year ago on the building of the evangelical parish comemorating Polish general József Bem and Hungarina poet Sándor Petőfi. – Even though we are few, we are never alone, there has always been a strange, but helping hand aiding us. Let’s just remember general Bem or the martyrs of Arad most of whom were also not Hungarian. Our forefathers managed to remain strong and united in their battles, so we should easily achieve solidarity in times of peace – said the MEP.
