The meeting of the settlements bearing the Tárkány name was organized for the 14th time this year. This time it was Nagytárkány in Slovakia that hosted the event on the 6th and 7th of June, where the Romanian and Hungarian delegations have also been participating.

The idea of organizing the event goes back to the year 2000, when a cooperation agreement was concluded between Nagytárkány and Felsőtárkány, followed a year later by the first Tárkány meeting. Since then the event has grown, this year hosting participants from Kis- and Nagytárkány (Slovakia), Kőröstárkány (Romania), Felsőtárkány, Mezőtárkány and Tárkány (Hungary).

The meeting of Tárkányok was organized by the Local Government of Nagytárkány from EU funds. A drawing exhibition was a part of the event, the topic of which was the European Union.

RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor and MKP MEP Pál Csáky held a debate within which the two politicians formulated their views on the current issues of the EU.

Csaba Sógor opened his speech with a Márai quote, stressing the importance of the sense of European belonging. Csaba Sógor pointed out that the meeting strengthens the sense of belonging of Hungarian communities, which are separated only by borders, but spiritually and culturally belong together.

The RMDSZ MEP also emphasized that in Europe the most important thing for the Hungarians living in minority is to benefit of legal safeguards that can lead to the preservation of their communities.
