Minority issues need to be presented as part of security and economical matters in Europe

The Hungarian Christian-Democratic Society of Romania (HCDSR) held its leadership position renewal convention at the Deus Providebit House of the Saint John the Baptist parish in Tirgu Mures on the 19th of March.

The HCDSR holds its conventions every two years in order to evaluate the work of the past years and to hear the report of the territorial organizations. The Friday meeting also saw the election of a new leadership for the Society.

MEP Csaba Sógor was the guest of the event and delivered a speech about the options available to the Hungarian minority in Transylvania. The MEP explained that minority issues need to be „packaged” in the European Parliament because these questions are seldom attended to due to fear of massive immigration: „We need to present minority issues as security and economical matters if we want keep them on the agenda”.

Csaba Sógor also stated that minority issues are in close correlation with the countries economical development and political stability, these being the factors behind the respect of minority rights. He made the example of the State Language Law in Slovakia that is a threat to the one of the main achievement of the European Union, the common internal market.

During the following debate questions arose about the possibilities of a Christian-Democratic society and a Christian person in general to influence the decisions being made in order to aid the minorities of Europe.

- It often might seem that the EPP is impatient towards diversity and delays decisions in this sense. I think that our role in the EPP Group is to enhance the special values of the party and influence its decisions through our set of values forged in the minority status – said Csaba Sógor.
