Csaba Sógor was the patron of the International Hungarian Mathematics Contest

Satu Mare gave home between 19th and 22nd of March to the International Hungarian Mathematics Contest's final, where Hungarian students from all over the Carpathian Basin tested their skills in mathematics.

MEP Csaba Sógor was the patron of the event and presented the winners of the contest arriving from Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Hungary and Transylvania with an invitation to visit the European Parliament with the help of his fellow MEPs Kinga Gál and Alajos Mészáros.

The International Hungarian Mathematics Contest has been organized every year since 1992 and it is the first time it was held in Satu Mare. The contest was held before in Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine and two Romanian cities, Odorheiu Secuiesc and Cristuru Secuiesc. This year’s final had an attendance of almost 250 students, guests and members of the jury.

MEP Csaba Sógor said at the award ceremony that „It is not coincidental that along with my colleagues Kinga Gál and Alajos Mészáros we considered it important to invite the winners of the mathematics contest to Brussels, technical specialist are between the most sought after professionals at the European Commission.” The best achieving representatives of the regions of the Carpathian Basin received the prize who can therefore meet outside the contest as well.

The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania also stressed the importance of the work of the teachers, who are not always duly rewarded in today’s world: „Often teachers are not valued properly, but we would be nowhere without them”. Csaba Sógor pointed out the example of Switzerland, where public school teachers are paid high; the Swiss having realized that the future of the students is decided in the high-school.
