The exhibition of Csaba Sógor at Covasna
After being showcased in the European Parliament in Brussels, the exhibition on Hungarian explorers entitled Encounters was also showed in the Transylvanian town of Covasna. The multilingual exhibition was opened by RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor, mayor János Thiesz and Calvinist dean Zoltán Balogh on May 13th in the Community Center of Covasna.
MEP Csaba Sógor quoted Hungarian writer and journalist Sándor Márai at the opening ceremony, saying: “Europe will exist as long as there will be encounters between cultures. On the one hand, we wished to show the way in which these Hungarian explorers enriched the scientific world with their selfless work, which they carried out despite the hardships they faced during their journeys. On the other hand, the goal of the exhibition was to prove that here, in the Eastern part of Europe, our heritage in strength, tenacity and discipline is still alive”, explained Csaba Sógor, pointing out that ”these are the same values which made these explorers great”.
The MEP mentioned that he has embarked on a journey himself, upon which he wishes to collect those Transylvanian values, which should also be represented in Europe: “I started to gather those of our treasures that contribute to making Europe richer and more diverse. We want the world and Europe to get to know us better, this is why we have to show our values, show who we are, and then present our problems and grievances, too”, set forth Sógor.
Dean Zoltán Balogh pointed out: “Sándor Kőrösi Csoma became a treasure of the scientific world, but he remained one of us, Hungarians. The message of this exhibition is that Hungarian explorers, although they venture into the world, they remain true to themselves and the place they were born. They were all able to return to their roots and find new strength there” stressed Zoltán Balogh, who thinks that the thirst for knowledge and the perseverance of these travellers is still an example for us today.
