The role of civic society in the representation of the values of tolerance, solidarity and equality of rights was the title of the seminar organized by the Pro Europe League in the Bod Peter Centre in Tirgu Mures on Friday, March 26th.

The organizers aimed to assess the strength of civic society in Tirgu Mures twenty years after the fall of communism and Romania’s perspectives after its adherence to the European Union.

The seminar was opened by Smaranda Enache, president of the Pro Europa League. She was followed by MEP Csaba Sógor who emphasized the importance of the European Citizen’s Initiative as one of the main innovations if the Lisbon Treaty. It is well known that policy-makers in Brussels are preparing to enact legislations that allow the citizens of the EU to voice their opinion in a direct and powerful fashion.

„The European Commission will be bound by the European Citizen’s Initiative to put forward any legislature that has been signed by one million citizens of the EU” – said the MEP. Csaba Sógor also assured the audience that the Initiative will strengthen the role of civic society in the development of community policies and will aid in the establishment of a real European public sphere.
