Message from Lazuri for Europe on the importance of cross-country cooperation

2014-06-14

The International Cultural Days of Lazuri, a commune from Satu Mare county in Northern Transylvania, were opened with the speech of RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor. Friday, on the first day of the three-day event, Lazuri and Zajta signed a twin town agreement.

Between the 13th and the 15th of June representatives and citizens of the twin towns Balkány and Zajta (Hungary), Slopnice (Poland) and Lazuri (Romania) met in Lazuri in the framework of a European Union cross border cooperation project.

At the opening of the event RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor held a speech about the role and importance of the European Union. According to the MEP “we need to do more than just draw EU funds and we need to do more than just visit the neighbouring town: we need to show Europe our values: our culture, our traditions, dances and religion. Community and generosity are still powerful forces in the eastern part of the continent, and we need to show this to Europe.

“This event goes beyond the borders of our town, we have visitors from the entire county and even from Hungary and Poland”, said deputy mayor Csaba Roszpapa. Mayor István Lengyel pointed out: “these meetings, our relations with the twin towns and the setting of common goals are crucial to the future of our community”.

Following a three-year pause, the annual event included folk music and dances, handicrafts sales, culinary competitions, exhibitions and concerts. Border crossings between the commune’s villages Peleș and Zajta and Bercu and Garbolc will be open for a day on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
