Szeklerland’s development ought to be strengthened locally

Csaba Sógor, Hungarian MEP from Transylvania delivered a speech at the marble room of the City Council of Miercurea Ciuc, invited by Mayor’s Office and the DAHR organization of Miercure Ciuc.


In his speech, entitled The future of Transylvania and Szeklerland in the EU and beyond, the MEP analyzed the, emphasizing the role locals in the development of the region.

DAHR’s MEP explained: Szeklerland’s future lies in decisions taken at a local level rather than in decisions made in Brussels or Bucharest. He warned the audience about the fact that politics cannot really influence the economy and that local residents need to take responsibility for the future of Szeklerland.

- There are two important factors in the region’s development. First, small communities need to preserve local values, the century old traditions. There are several good examples to this being a good source of income. On the other hand, we need to build a strong civic society that needs to be able to oversee and correct political activities – pointed out Csaba Sógor.

The MEP also spoke of the issue of autonomy in Szeklerland: in his opinion, first people need to define their autonomy for themselves and acknowledge that it can only be achieved through solidarity. “Instead of using weapons, we need to use diplomatic language in order to achieve our goals and make our environment accommodated to the fact that we desire autonomy – said Csaba Sógor.
