Csaba Sógor: We must show our values in Europe!

On 29 March RMDSZ launched its electoral campaign for the European Parliament elections at Odorheiu Secuiesc.

In his speech, the RMDSZ MEP recalled one of his ancestors, who was also mentioned by the Szekler historian and ethnographer Balázs Orbán. ”Legend has it that royal judge Gergely Hegyi put to flight a troop of Tartars on his own. He defended his village alone and with arms, but today battles are fought together and without weapons, at least this is the case in the European Union and in Romania. Today instead of lone heroes we need that force of the community, which is still alive in this corner of Europe”, stressed Csaba Sógor, adding that this force must also be shown in Brussels.

”During the last years we brought Transylvania to Europe, we presented our dances, traditions and values through which we also enrich Europe”, said Csaba Sógor. According to the RMDSZ politician, thanks to the lobbying activity carried out in Brussels and Strasbourg by the RMDSZ MEPs, Europe heard of the Hungarians from Romania. ”They know our community, the problems it faces and what we wish to change”, asserted the MEP.

The RMDSZ representative in the European Parliament, who will run for a new mandate, said: ”We must admit that the European Union did not relate to the problems of minorities as we hoped it would before 2007. Change comes about slowly in Brussels and Strasbourg, but through hard and persevering work we can achieve results. In February we saw the first instance when a resolution of the European Parliament  reflected the ideas we’ve been insisting on for seven years.”
