Within a lecture held at the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, MEP Csaba Sógor talked to students about the European Union’s functioning mechanism, the legislative role of the European Parliament and his activity within the European People’s Party.

Following the invitation of the university, the lecture was held on 22 November with the participation of students from the Communication and Public Relations departments. The MEP talked about several topics through which students could better grasp the functioning of the EU. According to Sógor, the European Parliament elaborates regulations in all areas of life, ensures the security of its citizens and improves their living conditions. The MEP also talked about food safety, environmental protection, child and organ trafficking, illegal immigration, corruption and the economic and moral crisis.

When questioned about the way the EU sees the Szeklers’ demand for territorial autonomy, Sógor stated that autonomy, as a form of administration is a member state competency in which the European Union does not intervene. According to Sógor, the Tavares report that criticised the government of Hungary it was at least useful in the sense that the European Union institutions realised that the Copenhagen criteria, among which the one referring to the protection of minorities need to be respected by member states as well. The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania stressed that the issue of territorial autonomy belongs to the political culture of the various countries. ”It all depends on whether we can sit down to talk and convince our Romanian colleagues that granting autonomy for Szeklerland would be economically advantageous for Romanians, too”, explained Sógor.

The MEP also added that if follow the development of the European Union, we can observe that the organisation that originated in the initial economic community at present takes decisions in most areas of life. “Sooner or later, Europe will realise that it will have to intervene in the area of minorities as well, at that time there will be European answers to the problems of Hungarians from Transylvania”, concluded the MEP.
