EU Knowledge Contest of Young Hungarians
High school students had the chance to prove their knowledge of European Union related subjects at the finals of the Our Europe competition organized on the 6th of April at Székesfehérvár. The winners were rewarded with study trips to Brussels and Strasbourg.
Students from a variety of high schools from the Carpathian Basin attended the contest organized by the Tarsoly Ifjúságért Egyesület association, the Szövetség a Közös Célokért Társulás association from Bratislava, the Kárpátaljai Magyar Pedagóguszszövetség teacher’s association from Transcarpatia (Ukraine) and the Virtus Vivens Egyesület from Miercurea-Ciuc (Romania). Among the participants there also were the students of the Szabó Dávid Technological High Scool of Baraolt, Covasna county.
The competition started in December 2012, with the participation of teams made of three students, 17 of which passed the three online rounds and made it to the finals.
Competitors needed to possess knowledge on general EU topics, human and civil rights, the Maastricht Treaty, the budget of the EU, the EU supported opportunities to study abroad, green energy and labor market issues, as well as the European Year for Active Aging (2012) and the European Year of Citizens (2013).
One of the patrons of the event was DAHR MEP Csaba Sógor, a longtime supporter of events focused on broadening the knowledge of young people regarding the European Union. The MEP awarded two of the winning teams study trips to the Brussels seat of the European Parliament. MEPs Edit Bauer and Edit Herczog were also patrons of the event and rewarded two other teams with study trips to Brussels and Strasbourg.
