Csaba Sógor : It’s the unity of small communities that makes us free and autonomous

DAHR MEP Csaba Sógor commemorated the heroes of the 1848-1849 revolution in Cristuru Secuiesc, Harghita County.  The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania held a service at the local reformed church and then joined the commemorations held in the city. In his festive speech, he emphasized the idea of responsible freedom.

“We commemorate today the heroic deeds of Petőfi, Bem, Damjanich, Klapka and of the other generals and revolutionaries. We were diverse back in 1848 and we are diverse today. There were people who didn’t want the union with Transylvania back then but still acted responsibly for a common cause. This is why we remember them all today as heroes of the revolution” –pointed out Sógor, adding: “We cannot achieve freedom in one day. Revolutions may die, but the ideals remain and become reality if unwavering, tenacious and responsible generations ensue.”

“We need large regions, we need to be split up because we are poor says our president, who has councilors that should know better the economic power of Transylvania, and should know that this region is the motor of the country’s economy. We, Hungarians of Transylvania want our freedom and welfare as well as that of others; this is what true and responsible freedom is”- said the MEP.

Csaba Sógor highlighted that, according to the critics, Petőfi was our first poet who wrote extensively about his wife and his family.  He was the poet of the family, and he believed in freedom and love. “I believe our poet’s message for us here today is that we can be free and love only if we are part of a community. We can experience and define love and freedom only in relation to one another. This is why it is important to come together and to be united not only during festivities, but also in our everyday lives. Some say we should be many, and we should gather and show our strength. I think it is rather the unity and responsible actions of our community that make us free and autonomous “, said Sógor.

“This is the most important day for our community, the day we raise our flag everywhere. The Szekler flag is dear to us, but it is the Hungarian flag that should be the most important, because through it we celebrate together and think of our fellow Hungarians from all over Romania and from other countries like Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine. Alongside the Hungarian flag we should raise the Romanian flag as well. Not only because the colours of our country’s flag remind us of Germans, Hungarians and Szeklers, but also because we live together with the Romanian people, and only by supporting each other mentally, morally and economically can we enrich each other. I hope that the notion of responsible freedom will not remain unknown to our Romanian brothers either”, the MEP concluded his speech.
