MEP Csaba Sógor, Timiş county DAHR president Ferenc Halász and MP candidate Zsolt Molnár emphasized the need to reorganize Romania’s regions in a press conference held in Timişoara on the 23rd of November.

“The reorganization of Romania’s regions must be a priority in 2013 in order for the country to be able to access more EU funding in the following budgetary period. This is why the regions that are to be defined must have clear administrative competences and functions”, said Csaba Sógor about the upcoming reorganization. He also stated that Romania accessed only 10% of the available EU funds and several funding programmes have been suspended due to irregularities. The MEP considers that this small percentage is due to the low level of decentralization of the country’s central institution system. “The EU will not interfere in Romania’s home affairs, but it expects Romania to implement functioning administrative units that facilitate the use of EU funding”, declared DAHR’s MEP.

Speaking about the plans to reorganize the regions, Ferenc Halász, Timiș county DAHR president and MP candidate said that the issue of the autonomy of Banat is once again in the spotlight. According to DAHR’s plans, Arad, Timiș and Caraș-Severin counties would form one region. “We need to reorganize the regions along the borders of the historical regions and we need to provide a higher level of self governance to the inhabitants of Banat”, said the president, who also added that DAHR was the first to present a plan for the reorganization of the regions, but the central government did not see it necessary to debate it.

DAHR’s MP candidate Zsolt Molnár stated: “Parliamentarians elected on the 9th of December need to make hard choices in 2013. Hungarians living in the Banat region have the opportunity to send a Hungarian MP to Parliament and thus to be represented at the highest decision-making level”.
