MEP Csaba Sógor assessed internship candidates through an EP simulation game
29 young candidates attended the Internship Camp hosted by DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor on the weekend of 12-14 October in Cluj Napoca at the Bethlen Kata Diaconal Center.
MEP Csaba Sógor presented his internship programme for 2012 this March and received almost one hundred applications. Nevertheless, only those young Hungarians from Transylvania will have a chance to work in the MEP’s Brussels office who have passed this summer’s test exam and have excelled in the Internship Camp.
The weekend was centered on a simulation of the EP. The camp began on Friday with people getting acquainted with each other and communication exercises, followed by the establishment of the political groups and the election of the EP officials. The simulation was led by communication specialists Magor Kádár and Szidónia Madaras.
The second day started with more communication exercises, followed by a group discussion about the internship. Csaba Sógor presented the structure of the four-week long internship, with three weeks in Brussels and one in Strasbourg. During this time the interns will have a chance to actively take part in the work of the office and gain first-hand experience of the European Parliament. “We want to provide everyone with the chance to use the internship for their professional development and networking, because this is a great opportunity to find new internships or even jobs”, said the MEP who has already offered internships for over fifty young Hungarians from Transylvania in the EP over the past years.
Candidates had to prove themselves through the EP simulation. They established five political groups and debated and amended a report on the economic crisis. Each candidate also had to do a one-minute speech during the plenary session before the final vote in order to present his personal opinion. “I’ve met some very gifted young people here, who I would enjoy working with. The camp provided an opportunity for me to get to know the candidates’ personalities, not only their test scores. It will not be easy to decide who will be the ten interns of next year. When choosing, I will consider their adaptability, openness for new challenges and interest in European issues” – concluded MEP Csaba Sógor.
