Relations between the Far East and the EU – What can we learn from each other?

Close to one hundred young people participated at the fourth edition of the Free University of the Youth Council of Háromszék (HÁRIT) held at Katrosa between the 11th and the 15th of July. The programme contained team contests and various presentations.

DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor was greeted this year as a returning guest by Ágnes Ájgel, communication vice-president of HÁRIT. The MEP held an interactive and open discussion. In his presentation entitled The Relationship between the EU and the Far East – What can we learn from each other? he presented his experiences related to the Eastern World and showed how developing Asian countries became world powers and how this affects European societies.

The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania is a member of the EP’s Tibet Intergroup and of the ASEAN Delegation, as well as substitute member of the Japan Delegation of the EP. The youth organization invited Csaba Sógor to speak about the particularities of the eastern cultures based on these activities.

Csaba Sógor presented several statistical data that influence not only EU leaders, but the leaders of the entire world as well. He also spoke about the fact that current population statistics show that the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin will disappear after 34 generations, while in 40 years the population of China will grow from 1,3 billion to 1,4 billion. “This may seem something very distant, but in reality we are speaking about the future of your children. We must pay attention to the eastern cultures because, with the current statistics, in few decades European labor markets will be filled up with eastern laborers, because otherwise there will be nobody here to do the work. So we will have to live with them” – said Csaba Sógor.

The MEP also stated that our traditional values become increasingly important. “We cannot forget our traditions, our cultural and architectural values, because only these can distinguish us. I hope many of you will have the opportunity to go to an eastern country, because upon returning you will be strengthened in your respect for your own culture and you will realize that faith in each other, family ties or business agreements made through a handshake should not disappear from Europe either” – he explained.

Csaba Sógor also emphasized that Hungarians from Transylvania cannot be indifferent to the autonomy of Tibet because it is an issue of interest for the entire world – When we fight for the autonomy of Tibet, we raise our voice for our own autonomy. We all know that Szeklerland will obtain self-government through peaceful means only if our Romanian colleagues realize its benefits. Tibet offers us the possibility to get Romanian politicians used to the notion of autonomy and speak about the problems of the Hungarians in Transylvania at higher levels” – said DAHR’s politician.
