Remetea won the Family Friendly Community award

2012-06-03

MEP Csaba Sógor presented leaders from Remetea, Romania with DAHR’s Family Friendly Community award on the 2nd of June.  In order to halt the demographic decline discovered after the census of 2011, DAHR started the Cooperation for Hungarian Future movement in the field of family policy last December.  As part of this policy, on the 15th of May, twenty local authorities have been honored for their family friendly actions.

Among these, the local government in Remetea stands out because during last year it spent two million lei for programmes helping families. Local leadership funded activities related to home care, village caretakers, people with disabilities, improvement of education and health care, as well as family oriented programmes. For its outstanding achievements, DAHR Family Policy Working Group awarded Remetea a special prize, too. As a member of the working group, MEP Csaba Sógor offered a trip to Brussels for 15 local students.

- Through this prize, DAHR seeks to call the attention of the local leaders to the fact that infrastructural developments need to be accompanied by social developments as well. In order to maintain social balance, we need to support nativity by helping large families. Various social segments need to be shown due respect : we need to support the elderly and those with disabilities. If we don’t pay attention to the elderly, we will lose their knowledge of our culture and traditions and lose touch with our roots – declared Csaba Sógor at the award ceremony.

DAHR’s MEP visited several localities in the Gheorgheni region on the 2nd of June. Accompanying Gheorgheni mayor candidate Zoltán Lázár and his team of councilors, he spoke with voters at the local market and visited several of them in their homes in order to urge them to take part in the vote on the 10th of June.

Mayor candidate Elemér Puskás from Ditrãu invited the MEP to a local meeting, while Suseni candidate László Sólyom asked him to talk about the Treaty of Trianon and its consequences at the local commemoration of the event. In the second part of the day, MEP Csaba Sógor and mayor of Joseni István György handed out awards to the local folk association during the village day. Here, Csaba Sógor emphasized: a community can be successful only if beside everyday work it has time to celebrate and preserve traditions.

Csaba Sógor’s visit to the Gheorgheni region ended in Lãzarea where he accompanied local mayor László Gábor to meet people and highlight the importance of participating in the vote.
