At the initiative of the youth candidates for local elections from the Covasna regional branch of DAHR, the Alliance’s youth caravan began its journey at the beginning of March. The young candidates will visit 20 localities in order to present their plans and programmes.

MEP Csaba Sógor attended the meeting in Baraolt on Saturday, the 17th of March, where the local youth representative, Walter Weithaler presented the problems and political ideas of the local youth. Senator Álmos Albert, FIDESZ deputy Krisztián Kapus, Barna Lázár Kiss, DAHR's mayor-candidate for Baraolt, and Ferenc Tischler, executive president of DAHR’s Covasna branch also attended the meeting. The event was opened by Róbert Grüman, the president of the Covasna Youth Council (HÁRIT). He declared that through their work they intend to deal with the problems of young people and this is why it is important to have youth representatives in the different structures of DAHR.
DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor supports HÁRIT’s program, which aims to include 100 youth representatives into the local administration structures of Covasna County. – Young people are driven by enthusiasm and vitality, they have special views about the future and plans, that only they can truly represent. The only important thing is for them not to lose their momentum and to be able to fulfill their dreams of social change – said the Hungarian politician from Transylvania. The MEP also gave some advice to the young candidates: they always need to know that political participation is not only a position, but rather a form of service that needs to be done unselfishly to the benefit of the community. “Although mandates are for four years, you need to make long term plans. The knowledge and experience of their elders can help you in your work” – he advised.
The MEP considers that DAHR’s organization is in need of rejuvenation and that there is much to be done in respect to the equal political participation of women as well. “There will always be issues that young people do better than the older generations and some functions will always be better performed by women due to their stronger social solidarity” – said the MEP.
At the meeting, the mayor of Kiskunfélegyháza, Krisztián Kapus warned that there is no democracy without young people, so it is crucial that they take part in public life: “We need to change the statistics according to which only a small part of young people take part in the shaping of the life of the community or go to vote. We need young people in the decision making bodies because only they can trigger the public participation of the youth.”
The youth caravan will tour other Covasna County localities in the following days. The closing event of the caravan will be held on the 25th of April in Sfântu Gheorghe.
