Sógor spoke of the Hungarian Media Law and about the carpet depicting historical Hungary in the EP
MEP Csaba Sógor spoke about the Hungarian Presidency during the one-minute speeches of the plenary session of the EP late Wednesday night.
DAHR’s MEP stated: „We’ve heard many malcontent and indignant remarks about the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Interestingly, none of these were concerned with the program of the Presidency. Some spoke against the new Media Law in Hungary. The European Commission has already formulated its remarks and the Hungarian government ha shown willingness to modify the law, if necessary.”
Csaba Sógor also added that „ I fail to see the why was there a lack of such intense international attention attributed to the State Language law in Slovakia, that is still in effect and still sets out fines for the use of minority languages? Why didn’t all those who fret about the infringement of fundamental rights raise their voices when one of the most fundamental rights of the Hungarian minority living in Slovakia came into question?”
The MEP also reminded that there were people who felt offended by the large carpet that displays Hungary’s map from 160 years ago that has been laid down in the building of the European Council. „This carpet symbolizes the fact that we can only build a strong Europe through the knowledge and respect of our common history and national values” – ended his words Sógor.
