Young researchers’ competitiveness lies within education
MEP Csaba Sógor attended a discussion organized by the European Training Foundation. The Agency, based in Turin, was established in order to contribute to the development of EU member states’ educational and training systems.
The participants presented their achievements at an exposition organized in the European Parliament between February 2nd and 4th 2011 with the attendance of over 30 EU agencies.
The discussion was held under the title “Education, business and innovation for growth and jobs”. Alongside MEP Csaba Sógor speakers Massimiliana Carello, leading professor of the student group that invented the H2politO in Turin, Lars Williams, leader of the research department at Nordic Food Lab, Ronald de Bruin, director of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and Madlen Serban, director of ETF participated
At the event, students from the Politecnico di Torino Institute presented their race car prototype named ‘Driving 1 538 km/L’ that runs on hydrogen reaches to high performances aside being environmentally friendly. The invention received two awards at the Shell Eco-Marathon in 2010.
MEP Csaba Sógor said at the event that it is crucial to maintain the young researchers’ competitiveness at a global level and the conditions for this are secured within education. The Hungarian MEP from Transylvania also stated that the success of these students is underlines the need to support innovation and creative solutions. – The EU provides great opportunities in this field, just think of the highly popular Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus programs or the recently organizes European Innovation Forum where young researchers and inventors had a chance to present their accomplishments and develop relationships – he explained.
Besides the need to provide proper conditions for education, the MEP also called for the attention of the importance of creating jobs. Answering Ronald de Bruin’s question about the chances of well prepared graduates in the harsh labor market, Sógor made reference to the EU 2020 strategy that aims to change Europe into an innovative, sustainable and inclusive economy in the next ten years, thus providing solutions to the issues of unemployment as well.
