The Unitarian Church in Vlahita inaugurated its new church bell

2010-11-27

The Unitarian congregation from Vlahita, with more than 350 congregation members, desires to build a new church because the current prayer room that is available is situated in the basement of the parish and proves not to be spacious enough.

Szabolcs Kelemen, the Unitarian pastor from Vlahita asked Kossuth-award winner architect Imre Makovecz to prepare the plans for the new church. So, because of the characteristics of the new church designed by Makovecz, the bell of the church would not be housed inside the building, so the congregation proceeded to the installment of the new bell regardless of the phase of building of the new church.

The ceremonial inauguration of the new bell took place on Saturday, 27th of November 2010, when Unitarian Dean László Nagy celebrated the service.

MEP Csaba Sógor celebrated alongside the Unitarians of Vlahita. In his speech he said that although history has arranged it in such a manner that so that we are used to hearing the sound of bell when in times of peril or mourning, today the bell’s sound carries in it the hopes of a community. The MEP also declared that the inauguration of the bell and the belfry is the first step towards the building of the new church.

Szabolcs Kelemen, the local Unitarian pastor said that the construction blueprints of the church have also been completed and some of the licenses needed for the beginning of the build have also been obtained.

- We are aware that it is very hard to obtain financial support for such projects in times of crisis but we are determined to fulfill the desire of our congregation and to be able to practice our religion under adequate circumstances – explained the pastor.
