Sibiu County’s only Hungarian school restored
The new building of the Báthory István Elementary School in Mediaş was inaugurated on October 29th, 2010 after three years of restoration works. MEP Csaba Sógor was present at the inauguration ceremony that was an important moment in the life of the Hungarian community in Mediaş.
During the three-year restoration period the school functioned in one of the buildings of the Air Force’s barracks. From November the 1st though, the pupils and teachers can relocate into the newly renovated and refurbished building.
- The name of Prince István Báthory obliges us, given how he stood his ground as a soldier, as a general, as well as King of Poland. He thought in long term perspectives, reflected by his actions. As King, he founded schools in Vilnius and Cluj. All pupils, teachers, even us politicians, we need to make long term plans if we desire to build a predictable future – said DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor in his remarks. He also reminded that the best long-term investment these days is knowledge.
Csaba Sógor explained that we need to provide the next generations with the opportunity to learn more languages in school and this is not only everyone’s personal interest, but also the economic interest of the state as well. The MEP pointed out the example of Israel, where not only Arabic students are required to learn the state language, Hebraic, but Hebrew children are also compelled to learn Arabic.
- We talk about multiculturalism, about the intersection of languages and cultures. True multiculturalism is not only about peaceful coexistence, but knowledge of each other’s language as well – said the MEP.
At the inauguration ceremony, Csaba Sógor also offered scholarships to one local and one commuter student.
In Sibiu County there currently are 942 native Hungarian children in preschool and elementary grade. Of them only 342 children receive Hungarian education, meaning that only 36% study in their mother tongue.
