Csaba Sógor:  The Hungarian nation’s desire for freedom never had boundaries.

The thirteen martyrs of Arad symbolize the everlasting desire for freedom and unity of the Hungarian nation, as well as the reconciliation and solidarity between nations – reminded MEP Csaba Sógor at the plenary session of the European Parliament held in Brussels on 6-7 of October.

October sixth is an anniversary that doesn’t need to be explained to Hungarians. 161 year ago, thirteen generals faced their death sentence with great bravery. DAHR’s MEP Csaba Sógor spoke about one of the most important moments in Hungarian history, a nation’s day of mourning in the EP’s plenary.

Here follows the speech of the MEP:

„This day, October 6th is an important date in Hungarian history. More than one and a half century ago Hungarian revolutionaries faced the two most powerful armies of Europe in the spirit of freedom, equality and fraternity. 13 of the generals of the defeated revolution were executed on this day in Arad, in today’s Romania. But the desire for freedom of the Hungarian nation did not have limits in the most oppressive system of the 20th century, communism, as the events of 1956 clearly show. The 13 martyrs of Arad – out of which only four were of Hungarian ethnicity, showing the supranational character of universal values – symbolize the everlasting desire for freedom and unity of the Hungarian nation, the reconciliation and solidarity between nations.”
