Csaba Sógor's campaign-2009

We should be able to speak Hungarian wherever we are!

This was the plea of residents of Satu Nou (Teremiújfalu) to Csaba Sógor today, whose campaign bus is touring the villages of the Nyárádmente region. In Teremiújfalu the arrival of the MEP candidate sparked an impromptu civil debate in the street. The residents of the village object to the fact, that they are unable to administer their daily affairs in Hungarian at public institutions. They also asked how the European Union could also be persuaded to concern itself with the issue of autonomy.

"In Romania even the head of state has realised that the Romanian language has to be taught differently to children whose mother tongue is Hungarian; indeed, Traian Basescu has gone as far as to speak of cultural autonomy. We won't achieve our objective from one day to the next, and Brussels is also adopting a policy of taking small steps. We need to achieve a situation in which introduction of the cultural and territorial autonomy that has already been proven to work in fourteen European countries becomes an accepted practice throughout the EU", said Csaba Sógor, detailing his stance on the issue. He added that Hungarians living in Romania have a need for cultural autonomy, and those living in Seklerland need territorial autonomy.
